MEERUT: Ten people from a family have died after a three-storey building collapsed at Zakir Colony, Meerut, following continuous, heavy rains on Saturday evening.
Rescue teams responded quickly, pulling 15 people from the debris, five of whom survived. The condition of one of them is critical. Authorities believe the heavy rains weakened the structure of the building, leading to the collapse.
The deceased belonged to the family of Nafisa Begum, who owned the building. Among the dead were Sajid, his 11-year-old son, Mohd Saqib, who was found cradled in his father’s arms, and his 15-year-old daughter, Saniya. His wife, Saina, is critical, while his mother, Nafisa, also perished. Rimsa, a five-month-old baby, was the youngest victim.
The building also housed a cattle dairy, a common feature in the congested Zakir Colony. Officials said several animals were trapped in the debris, though the exact number of those that perished is yet to be confirmed. “The number of animals that died will be assessed after the rescue operation is over,” Meena said.
