Sexual assault case: NCW fact-finding committee visits Anna University

A two-member fact-finding committee formed by the National Commission for Women (NCW) arrived in Chennai from New Delhi on Monday to investigate the sexual assault of a 19-year-old engineering student on the Anna University campus. 

The team comprising Mamta Kumari, member of NCW, and Praveen Dixit, former DGP of Maharashtra, is visiting the Anna University campus, and will interact with the university authorities, the survivor, her family, and others to ascertain the facts of the case.

The incident occurred December 23, and based on the complaint filed by the survivor, the Kotturpuram All Women Police had arrested Gnanasekaran, the accused, on December 25. The Madras High Court had also ordered to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising three women IPS officers; they would begin their investigation soon.

The NCW, which had begun its probe into the case suo motu, had accused the Tamil Nadu police of negligence and had ordered State DGP Shankar Jiwal to take appropriate action against the officials responsible for the leak of the FIR in the case, revealing the identity of the student who was sexually assaulted.
