In a conversation with The Indian Express, actor Shahid Kapoor opened up about his childhood, sharing his experiences of growing up without his father, veteran actor Pankaj Kapur, and how his mother, Neelima Azeem, raised him single-handedly. Despite being born into a family of actors, Shahid revealed that his journey to stardom wasn’t paved with ease. He often considered himself an outsider who had to struggle to make his mark in the industry.

Early life and struggles
Shahid’s parents, both renowned figures in the Indian film industry, divorced when he was just a toddler. His mother, Neelima, was only 22 when she gave birth to him and was left to raise him on her own after the separation. Recalling the impact this had on his early life, Shahid shared that it prompted him to start working at a very young age to support his mother.
Close bond with his mother
“My mom was quite young when she had me. We were more like friends,” Shahid said. “She always took me wherever she went. And the fact that I was her first and elder son, somewhere I used to feel very responsible.” Growing up without his father around, Shahid revealed that he naturally felt like the “man of the house” from a young age. “At such situations, you don’t see your age but feel like, ‘I am the man of the house’,” he explained. Although he had little to offer at the time, Shahid said he had the courage to stand up for his mother, whom he always felt protective and loving towards.

Shahid further emphasized the special bond he shares with his mother. “She always treated me like a friend, and I think that was the best thing between us. We continue to share the same bond,” he added, underscoring the deep affection and understanding that has shaped their relationship over the years.
