Veteran actor Sharmila Tagore has candidly shared her experiences of facing judgment and social stigma early in her career. Known for her groundbreaking roles and grace, the celebrated star opened up during the latest edition of SCREEN Live, reflecting on the prejudices she endured as an independent, single woman in the film industry.
Sharmila Tagore recalls facing prejudice as an independent woman, labelled “Bad girl”: “I became a social suspect”
A Journey Through Judgment
Sharmila Tagore revealed that her non-conformity to societal norms led to her being labeled a “bad girl.” “When I joined films, working in films was deeply frowned upon,” she said, adding that the industry itself faced judgment. “The male actors were accepted, but the women were not respected,” she explained, highlighting the gender bias of the era.
She recalled how her image transformed over time. “When you get married, there is a different kind of respect. And when you become a mother, then you’ve joined the collective.” She shared an anecdote from a visit to Hyderabad, where people showed her deference as a mother, asking if her son needed assistance.
Facing Mob Fury
Sharmila also recounted a harrowing incident when a mob hurled mud at her and threatened to set her train on fire. Despite the hostility, her confidence remained unshaken. “I came from a different kind of family. I was GN Tagore’s daughter. I knew who I was, and I had self-confidence. I didn’t really care much about what others said about me,” she said.
However, societal judgment loomed large. “Because I lived alone in a hotel, I was not chaperoned, people had different ideas. I became a social suspect. Others were from Maharashtra, they were chaperoned, they wore white, they didn’t drink alcohol. I was different, so I was the ‘bad girl,’” she added.
Family Support and Changing Times
Tagore acknowledged the support she received from her family, which helped her navigate the criticism. “Support and affirmation came from my family,” she said. She expressed satisfaction with how societal attitudes towards the film industry have evolved over the years, with greater acceptance and respect for women.
Despite the challenges, Sharmila Tagore maintained her integrity. “I cannot possibly please everybody, but as long as my conscience is clear, I’m fine with the brickbats,” she said, exuding the same self-assurance that has defined her illustrious career.
