In a recent episode of The Filmy Hustle Podcast by RosePod, music composer and singer Shekhar Ravjiani shared insights into his creative journey, recalling memorable moments from his career. Speaking to host Akkshay Rathie, Shekhar touched upon collaborations, his experiences in the music industry, and the stories behind some of his most popular tracks.
Shekhar Ravjiani recalls the unique brief Farah Khan gave him for ‘Dard-E-Disco’ on The Filmy Hustle Podcast: “I remember Farah saying ‘Give me rubbish in this song’”
Reflecting on his work with celebrated lyricist Javed Akhtar, Shekhar said, “It feels like the song was written first then composed. He makes you feel like that, you compose a song and say Javed sahab yeh dhun hai, uspe Javed sahab likhenge, lekin likhne ke baad aisa lagta hai ki lyrics pehle aaye hai uske baad compose kiya hai (Javed sir, here is the tune, and he will write on it, but after he writes, it feels like the lyrics came first and then the tune was composed).”
During the conversation, Shekhar also shared a behind-the-scenes anecdote from the making of Om Shanti Om, a 2007 Bollywood film directed by Farah Khan and starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone. The film was a grand tribute to Hindi cinema of the 1970s and became a massive box office success, with its music album by Vishal-Shekhar still fondly remembered today.
Talking about the creation of the hit track Dard-E-Disco, Shekhar recalled, “For ‘Dard-E-Disco’ I remember Farah saying ‘Give me rubbish in this song, I want rubbish happening in this song’ and then ‘Dard-E-Disco’ came out of there. Again, madness in one room together, I still remember the whole mad times of putting this song together and how Om Shanti Om came out. That soundtrack is still the most loved Vishal & Shekhar album.”
‘Dard-E-Disco’, with its catchy beats and quirky lyrics, became one of the standout tracks of the album and added to the overall flamboyant appeal of Om Shanti Om. The film’s soundtrack, blending retro influences with contemporary sounds, remains one of Vishal-Shekhar’s most iconic works.
