The much-awaited show, The Roshans, was released today on Netflix. As the title suggests, it’s about the Roshan family and their immense contribution to cinema. The four episodes are neatly divided among the four Roshans, namely Roshan Lal Nagrath, Rakesh Roshan, Rajesh Roshan and Hrithik Roshan. The third episode focuses on Rakesh Roshan, his struggling acting career and how he found his calling in direction.
SHOCKING: Rakesh Roshan reveals in The Roshans that he was replaced by Jeetendra as the main lead in Priyatama due to Neetu Kapoor and distributors: “The producer told me ‘Distributors and heroine are worried that tum honge toh picture bikegi nahin’”
Rakesh Roshan noted about his acting struggles saying, “I was not ready to disappear. I wanted to stay in sight of the people. I started doing villainous or side roles and even guest appearances. I stayed put at the bus stop thinking that come storm or hurricane or rain or whatever, I’d stand here. Kabhi na kabhi koi bus aayegi aur mujhe leke jaayegi apne saath.”
He then revealed a shocking episode where he was replaced by Jeetendra for the lead role in a significant film as actress Neetu Kapoor and the distributors had reservations about his popularity. He revealed, “In 1976, a reputed director Basu Chatterjee, signed me for Priyatama. I felt my time was finally taking a turn for the good. But one day, the producer called and told me, ‘We want to sign someone else because the distributors and heroine are worried that tum agar film mein honge, toh picture bikegi nahin. That heroine won’t work with you either’.”
He continued, “Then Basu da met me and said, ‘Iss film mein aur ek accha role hai, Guddu’. Since it was Basu da, I couldn’t say no. However, I was hurt that day. I went on the terrace and started screaming and fighting with God. Main kosta raha bhagwan ko, ‘Kyun aisa kar rahe ho mere saath? Main toh mehnat kar raha hoon’.”
Rakesh Roshan then revealed that inspired by this episode, he wrote a similar scene in Koi Mil Gaya (2003) where Hrithik’s character Rohit cries while holding the idol of Lord Krishna when he’s going through a hard time.
