Shopkeeper Vinayak returning the gold jewellery to its owner, Yoganandam, at II-Town Police station, in Chittoor, on Sunday.
The Chittoor Urban police on Sunday recovered gold ornaments worth ₹25 lakh and handed the property to its owner within half an hour of receiving a complaint.
In the morning, Yoganandam, a contractor from Gangadhara Nellore near Chittoor, had purchased two rice bags from a shop at Chinna Vishnu Bhavan centre in the city. While loading the bags into his car, the contractor dropped his baggage containing around 240 grams of gold jewellery. Later, he proceeded to Bengaluru.
After reaching Bengaluru and realising that his bag was missing, Yoganandam rushed to the II-Town police station and filed a complaint. Chittoor Urban Inspectors Nettikantaiah and Maheshwar, along with a team from the Crime Branch, launched an inquiry. They started at the location where the valuables were reported missing.
On seeing the police team, a local shopkeeper, identified as Vinayak, informed the police that he had found the unclaimed bag lying on the road and kept it safe. The bag, with its contents intact, was handed over to the police. Following verification of the contents and CCTV footage, the police returned the bag to Yoganandam. As a gesture of goodwill, the contractor presented a cash reward of ₹5000 to Vinayak.
Superintendent of Police (SP) V.N. Manikanta Chandolu also acknowledged Vinayak’s gesture.
