NEW DELHI: Multi-layered security will be in place till Friday afternoon with traffic restrictions in Lutyens’ Delhi. On Thursday, all vital installations were sanitised, manholes sealed and cops were deployed on roads at every 40-50 metres. The special cell has placed spotters, along with snipers, on high-rises and a ‘G20-inspired’ security apparatus will be put in place.
Over 70,000 personnel have been deployed across Delhi, including 14,000 at and around Kartavya Path. Additionally, more than 200 commandos from Delhi Police and ITBP have been deployed at strategic locations. “Armed cops in 160 PCR vehicles are patrolling the sensitive areas in the city,” an officer said. Furthermore, seven SWAT teams have been deployed to tackle any untoward incidents.
In New Delhi district, over 100 morchas and pickets have been installed to keep an eye on suspicious activities. More than 60 quick response teams are also keeping a tab. Cops will carry out random shoe checks for visitors attending Republic Day Parade to avert any kind of security breach.
“We carried out foot patrolling in sensitive areas and asked people to inform them about any suspicious activities,” the officer said.
Delhi Police PRO Suman Nalwa said in addition to comprehensive ground security, they have implemented robust countermeasures to neutralise any potential aerial threats. “We are currently coordinating with other stakeholders in real time,” she said.
Meanwhile, in a first-of-its-kind initiative, Delhi Police in coordination with MapmyIndia has created links to facilitate pick up and drop for R-Day viewers. Police have also taken visitor-friendly measures, including missing persons booths at key locations, helpdesks and first-aid kiosks. Separate facilitation booths have been set up for visitors to deposit their vehicle keys before the parade.
A traffic advisory stated that the parade would start at 10.30am and pass through Vijay Chowk, Kartavya Path, C-Hexagon, Subhas Chandra Bose roundabout, Tilak Marg, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Netaji Subhas Marg and Red Fort. There will be a related function at National War Memorial at 9.30am.
“No traffic movement will be allowed on Kartavya Path from Vijay Chowk to India Gate from 6pm on Thursday and will continue till the parade is over. No cross-traffic will be allowed on Kartavya Path at Rafi Marg, Janpath, Man Singh Road from 10pm Thursday till the end of the parade,” it stated.
C-Hexagon-India Gate will be closed for traffic from 9.15am Friday till the parade crosses Tilak Marg. From 10.30am on Friday, traffic on Tilak Marg, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg and Netaji Subhas Marg will not be allowed.
