With temperatures soaring across Telangana, the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU) has reported a sharp spike in kidney stone cases this summer, calling it one of the most severe surges in recent years.

The hospital is currently treating an estimated 300 to 400 patients per day for kidney stones, a two to two-and-a-half-fold rise compared to winter months.

In a press release, AINU attributed the surge to dehydration, poor dietary habits, and prolonged heat exposure. Doctors have dubbed summer the ‘Stone Season’, as the extreme weather significantly increases the risk of stone formation, particularly due to reduced water intake and high salt consumption.

“We are seeing an unprecedented rise in kidney stone cases, especially among young adults and children. The soaring heat and insufficient hydration are the primary culprits. What’s particularly concerning is the increasing trend in school children, largely driven by high junk food consumption. Stones are not just a problem of adults anymore,” said Dr. Taif Bendegeri, Senior Consultant Urologist at AINU.

The hospital has also issued a set of preventive tips: Drink enough water, reduce salt intake, processed food, and animal protein, avoid junk food and sugary drinks and seek medical attention, if children show signs of unexplained abdominal pain or frequent urinary discomfort.
