A six-member team of students pursuing final year of Computer Science Engineering (CSE) course in SRM University-A.P. has bagged first prize in the Smart India Hackathon (SIH)-2024 held recently at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu.
Competing against top talent from across the nation, the team members — Akash Meruva, Sikindhar Jaladi, Sashank Sakkurthi, Sathwik Batta, Cherish Polu and Pranathi Jayanthi — impressed the jury with their innovative solution for enhancing Android security. The award was presented by Director of IIT Jammu Manoj Gaur.
SIH is a premier nationwide initiative designed to engage students in solving some of the most pressing challenges faced in everyday life. Launched to foster a culture of innovation and practical problem-solving, SIH provides a dynamic platform for students to develop and showcase their creative solutions to real-world problems.
This year’s edition witnessed participation of more than 88,000 registered teams tackling real-world challenges presented by 254 organisations. The SRM team competed under the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) with a problem statement focusing on developing a web framework to add additional security features to Android 14 and higher.
Out of the 80 submissions for this problem statement, only five teams made it to the grand finale. The SRM University-A.P. team emerged victorious after an intense 36-hour hackathon.
They returned home with a cash award of ₹1 lakh. “The best part of the event was that we had an opportunity to interact with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in online mode,” said a team member.
