Mysuru: Amid election buzz, the experts committee formed by the state government under the chairmanship of former chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Sukhadeo Thorat has submitted a draft preliminary report on State Education Policy (SEP) to the state government.
Meanwhile, the confusion surrounding implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has resulted in a textbook crisis for students studying at the undergraduate level.
According to sources in the state education department, two days prior to the announcement of the Lok Sabha election, the committee submitted the draft to the state government. “We were informed that after May 7 (phase 2 election), this draft will be taken up for discussion,” said sources in the state higher education department.
Karnataka’s 28 Lok Sabha seats will go for polling in two phases, which will end on May 7. Only the draft preliminary report has been submitted. The government will accept the final report once it is ready, higher education minister MC Sudhakar said.
Meanwhile, the confusion surrounding the NEP has resulted in textbook crisis in the core subjects at the undergraduate level. According to both students, and faculty, the first NEP batch students are now entering their third year. But the publishers are not ready to print the textbooks for the new classes citing fear of loss if the NEP syllabus is replaced with the SEP, explained students, and faculty.
The publishers are expecting SEP from the first-year degree in this academic year (2024-25). They stopped printing books for the first year. Many publishers are not publishing the books for the third year and fourth year of the NEP batch fearing that the government may return to the three years model like earlier, explained a professor from Mysuru.
University of Mysore vice-chancellor NK Loknath said he is aware of the textbook challenge. The state government is yet to take any decision on SEP, he said.
