Texas state representative Shawn Thierry announced on Friday that she is joining the Republican Party following her defeat in the Democratic primary earlier this year for her Houston seat.
Thierry announced her decision of leaving Democratic Party on X: “I am leaving the left because the left has abandoned Democrats who feel betrayed by a party that has lost its way, lost its commitment to hard working families.”

Thierry, who has represented House District 146 for four terms, is becoming a Republican following her loss to challenger Lauren Ashley Simmons.
The state representative criticised the Democratic Party for moving too far left and supporting policies she cannot endorse, such as those related to gender transition for minors and changes to Title IX protections. She expressed her alignment with the Republican Party’s values of family, faith, and freedom.
Texas governor welcomes Thierry
Texas governor Greg Abbott on X welcomed Thierry to the GOP, praising her decision as a rejection of the “radical leftist agenda” of the Democratic Party.

House speaker congratulates Thierry
House speaker Dade Phelan also congratulated Thierry, expressing enthusiasm for her contributions to Republican causes.

Official reaction from Democrats
The Texas Democratic Party released a statement on X criticising Shawn Thierry’s party switch and accusing her of compromising Democratic values.

Texas representative Trey Martinez Fisher also accused Thierry of betraying her constituents and aligning with a party he describes as divisive.

Thierry’s term will end on January 14, the start of the next legislative session. The outcome of the November 5 general election will determine whether Simmons or Republican Lance York will take over her seat.
