NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin responded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s criticism on the Katchatheevu issue by questioning the BJP’s sudden interest in fishermen prior to elections.
Stalin raised concerns about the lack of adequate flood relief for Tamil Nadu, despite the state’s substantial contributions in taxes. He also inquired about any special schemes implemented for the state during the BJP’s tenure, in a social media post.
Urging the Prime Minister to address these issues instead of diverting attention, Stalin tweeted “bathil sollunga Modi,” which translates to “Modi, answer the questions.”

CM Stalin’s response came after PM Modi accused the DMK of neglecting Tamil Nadu’s interests and cited TOI reports suggesting that the late M Karunanidhi, former chief minister and DMK leader, had consented to the Katchatheevu agreement despite the party’s public stance against it.PM Modi criticized the DMK and Congress, alleging that they prioritized their own interests over those of the people.
The TOI report cited by PM Modi was based on an RTI reply received by Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai regarding the 1974 agreement between India and Sri Lanka.

Earlier in the day, external affairs minister S Jaishankar also criticized the Congress and DMK for their indifference toward the island and highlighted the longstanding issue of Indian fishermen being detained by Sri Lanka.
The Katchatheevu island, situated between Rameswaram (India) and Sri Lanka, has been historically utilized by fishermen from both countries.
The dispute over its ownership and the welfare of fishermen remains a contentious issue between India and Sri Lanka, with political parties in Tamil Nadu frequently raising concerns about the plight of fishermen and the island’s sovereignty.
