Kirkire’s Shock at Missing Credit

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Swanand Kirkire shared his disappointment upon learning that his name was omitted from the credits of the Deool song on Spotify. The song, which he both wrote and sang, was composed by Mangesh Dhakde. However, the credit on the streaming platform was given to renowned playback singer Uttara Kelkar. Expressing his frustration, Kirkire wrote in Marathi, “Someone recently reminded me of a song I had sung from the film Deool, so I went to listen to it on Spotify. To my shock, I found that my name wasn’t there.”

Kirkire’s post quickly gained attention as he highlighted the seriousness of such mistakes, stating that this was not just a small error but something that could distort the historical record of the song’s creation.

Addressing Spotify’s Possible Response

Swanand Kirkire also anticipated Spotify’s potential response, assuming that the platform would shift responsibility to those submitting the metadata. He argued that a major platform like Spotify should have processes in place to ensure that such mistakes can be corrected. “Spotify will say it’s not our job, whoever filled the metadata should have seen it. You’re such a big platform, you must have some way to fix the error. This is history being written,” Kirkire asserted in his post.

The singer further raised concerns about the long-term impact of such errors, pointing out that years from now, listeners may wrongly attribute the song to the wrong artist.

Having said that it is worth mentioning here that, Spotify, as of now, hasn’t responded to Swanand’s tweet.
