About 1.38 lakh pattas have been issued to people in Chennai and its peripheral areas, who previously did not have them, Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin said in Chennai on Tuesday (May 13, 2025).
Speaking at a government function at Kathivakkam, where he distributed pattas to about 1,500 people, the Deputy Chief Minister said pattas have been distributed to over 2,100 people in Tiruvottiyur constituency since September last year.
He also pointed out that over 400 people, who were allotted lands in exchange for their lands for North Chennai Thermal Power Plant, were not given pattas for several years. “The Chief Minister [M.K. Stalin] instructed that they be given pattas. After 35 years, they have been given pattas today.”
Underlining the importance of pattas for lands, Mr. Udhayanidhi said that many housing plots in Chennai, which were distributed in the 1970s and 1980s, did not have pattas. “There were many technical issues. We have resolved them all, and are giving pattas now.”
The government distributed 1,500 pattas on Tuesday, he said, adding: “It would not stop here. Steps are on to distribute about 18,000 more pattas for people in this area. Our MLAs would distribute them soon.”
