PMK president Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss on Tuesday criticised the State government for taking oppressive measures against guest lecturers who are protesting for salaries as per the University Grants Commission’s recommendations.

There are 7314 guest lecturers working in around 164 government arts and science colleges across Tamil Nadu. “Even though they are eligible in terms of experience and qualifications to be appointed as assistant professors, they are only being paid ₹25,000 as guest lecturers. Tamil Nadu pays one of the lowest salaries for guest lecturers. Only last year, the salary of guest lecturer who joined 15 years ago at a salary of ₹10,000 had grown to ₹20,000. They are given a salary only for 11 months in a year and they have no other rights or privileges,” he said.

Dr. Anbumani said that the demands of guest lecturers are fair and just, but yet the State Government is using aggressive measures against them by threatening that they will be dismissed.

Only in ‘progressive’ Tamil Nadu, even just wages are not being paid despite the fact that most government arts and science colleges are run with the help of guest lecturers. More than 8,000 vacant positions are being filled by guest lecturers. It is unfair to reject their demands,” he said. The State Government must hold discussions with guest lecturers and bring their protest to an end, he added.
