CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government informed the Madras high court on Monday that functions, bhajans and annadhanams held in private enclosures and temples in view of the Ram temple consecration in Ayodhya do not require prior permission from the police.
“If such functions are planned to be conducted in temples under the control of the HR & CE Department, the official concerned must be informed beforehand, and permission will be granted subject to reasonable conditions,” the state said.
The government made the submission in response to a plea by L Ganapathy challenging the rejection of permission to conduct Ram Nama Bhajan and annadhanam at a private marriage hall in Pattabiram.
The court agreed to hear the plea at 9:30 am on Monday, an hour before the usual court proceedings. Justice N Anand Venkatesh recorded the state’s submissions, stating, “The above stand taken by the state makes it quite clear that conducting the function considering the auspicious occasion, singing Bhajans / uttering Rama Nama / Annadhanams is not per se prohibited or restricted.”
The judge emphasized conducting the function responsibly and piously without causing any law and order problems, adding that misinformation should not be spread. The court stressed the importance of maintaining peace and happiness through devotion to God without disturbing societal equilibrium.
