KALLAKURICHI: The death toll in Kallakurichi hooch tragedy rose to 55 on Saturday, with 159 people undergoing treatment, including 107 at Kallakurichi govt hospital, 31 at Salem, 17 at Jipmer-Puducherry and four at Villupuram GH. The condition of over two dozen people undergoing treatment is said to be critical.
District administration has deputed medical teams to visit the localities where hooch deaths were reported, and screen and identify people who had consumed spurious liquor but were reluctant to seek medical attention and admit them to hospitals.
Meanwhile, two of the five patients who absconded while undergoing treatment were traced by police and brought to Kallakurichi govt hospital for treatment. The whereabouts of three other absconding patients are not known.
Kallakurichi GH dean said 30 patients fully recovered and will be discharged after psychiatric counselling. None of the patients will be discharged without undergoing psychiatric counselling, he said.
Kallakurichi collector M S Prasad said seven people involved in illicit arrack business were arrested. They have been booked on murder and other charges under IPC sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 328 (causing hurt using poison, etc., with intent to commit an offence) based on a complaint by one K Manikandan.
