CHENNAI: Sri Lankan opposition MP Mano Ganesan on Thursday said Tamils in the island nation are loyal to their country but they do not get equal justice.
Speaking on the first day of World Tamil Diaspora Day 2023 in Chennai, Ganesan said, “Tamils — both the Eelam Tamils and hill country Tamils — are not treated equally. We (Tamils) are loyal to the countries in which we settle, and all the countries accept our loyalty except Sri Lanka where there is no equal justice to Tamils.”
Ganesan said, “Justice to all is the hallmark of the Dravidian government in Tamil Nadu. This government should extend support to Sri Lanka.”
Sports minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inaugurated two-day World Tamil Diaspora Day celebrations conducted with the theme ‘Tamil Vellum’ (Tamil will win). In the event, hundreds of Tamil delegates and students from various countries participated.
Udhayanidhi also inaugurated stalls set up by Tamils from various countries and interacted with them.
Udhayanidhi appreciated the non-resident Tamils welfare department for protecting overseas Tamils. “Earlier, we used to read the news that Tamils going to foreign countries were cheated by agents but now it has been largely reduced due to the efforts of the non-resident Tamils welfare department,” Udhayanidhi said.
He said the state government with the intention of teaching Tamil to the children of Tamils settled in foreign countries is supplying Tamil books to them through the state textbook corporation.
Sri Lankan MP Sanakiyan Rasamanickam appreciated the state government for the help rendered during the economic crisis in Sri Lankan. “Tamil Nadu government sending relief materials during the crisis time was a proud moment for us because the relief materials were sent not just to Tamils but to all the Sri Lankans,” said Sanakiyan.
“In the 1980s, Sri Lankan Tamils used to demand weapons from Tamil Nadu government, and the government helped. Now I am asking for a weapon, and the weapon is economic support to Sri Lanka,” said Sanakiyan.
Chief minister M K Stalin is participating in the second day of the World Tamil Diaspora Day celebrations in which he is set to interact with 58 Tamil students from various countries, who toured the entire Tamil Nadu for 14 days.
