BHOPAL: A teacher declared a Class 3 student dead in the official register and went on leave to attend his funeral, despite the child being alive and healthy, in Mauganj district.
Senior officials suspended the teacher after the matter came to light.
The incident took place at govt primary school Chikir Ka Tota, situated in Chakrahan Tola village panchayat under Naigarhi tehsil of Mauganj district.
The teacher posted at the school, Heeralal Patel, informed the students and wrote in official registers on November 7 that Jitendra Kori, son of Ram Saroj Kori, passed away and he was going to attend his funeral.
He further wrote in records that Jitendra was a regular student of his class.
It was later, on November 28, that the family of the student came to know about the incident and reported the matter at the local police station.
When the matter reached the district officials, the district collector suspended the teacher on Tuesday.
“Harivansh Kori, the grandfather of the student Jitendra, died on November 7, but the teacher, instead of Harivansh, wrote Jitendra’s name in school records as deceased and left the school, saying he was going to attend the funeral. It was on November 28 that the family members of Jitendra, his father Ram Saroj, came to know about the incident as the picture of the note made by the teacher was shared on local village social media groups.
Then they complained about it to the police,” Sarpanch of Chakrahan Tola, Rajesh Pratap Singh, told TOI.
When TOI contacted the suspended teacher, Heeralal Patel, he said, “I made a mistake, I was not well, I am a patient of diabetes.”
