NEW DELHI: Tehri Garhwal Lok Sabha constituency, a key parliamentary seat in Uttarakhand, is set for polling on April 19 in the first phase of the 2024 general elections. Tehri Garhwal is one of the five Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttarakhand. Established in 1957, this constituency covers parts of the Dehradun, Tehri Garhwal, and Uttarakashi districts. Known for its political significance, Tehri Garhwal holds sway in Indian politics due to its diverse demographics.
Chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar on March 16 announced the dates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. According to election commission of India, the polls will be held in 7 phases, beginning on April 19 and ending on June 1 and the results will be declared on June 4.
The upcoming elections have sparked enthusiasm among voters keen to make their voices heard. The prominent candidates vying for the seat include Neem Chand Chhuriyal from the Bahujan Samaj Party, Smt Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah from the Bharatiya Janata Party, and Jot Singh Guntsola from the Indian National Congress.
In the 2019 elections, BJP’s Mala Rajya Lakshmi Shah secured victory with 565,333 votes, defeating Congress candidate Pritam Singh. The voter turnout was 54.38%.
Similarly, in 2014, Shah emerged triumphant by a significant margin. As the countdown to the elections begins, Tehri Garhwal remains a focal point of political activity in Uttarakhand.
