SRINAGAR: A cross-border terror module involved in smuggling of arms and ammunition has been busted, and five terror associates arrested in Karnah in Kupwara district, J&K Police said Saturday.
In a statement, police said it had received “credible information” about arms smuggling from its own sources, which was “corroborated by other sister agencies and counterparts”.
Acting on the inputs, Kupwara police, along with 9 PARA Field Regiment, first arrested one Zahoor Ahmad and recovered an AK rifle and magazine, 20 AK rounds, two pistols and two pistol magazines from him.
Zahoor, who hails from a village located near the Line of Control (LoC), was in touch with two Lashkar-e-Taiba handlers, Manzoor Ahmad Sheikh alias Shakoor and Qazi Mohammad — who are from Karnah but now operate from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir — and received arms and ammunition from them.
The consignments dispatched to this side from across the LoC were delivered to other terror associates who were in contact with Zahoor and also directly with the handlers, police said.
Based on further leads and questioning of Zahoor, four more terror associates — Khursheed Ahmad Rather, Mudassir Shafiq, Ghulam Sarwar Rather and Qazi Fazal Illahi — were arrested. Arms and ammunition, including 5 AK rifles and magazines and 16 AK rounds, besides other incriminating materials, were recovered from them.
A comprehensive probe was being carried out to “further unearth the conspiracy”, police said
