NEW DELHI: In a move to make Indore beggar-free, district authorities announced on Monday that FIRs will be registered against individuals giving alms to beggars starting January 1, 2025. The administration has already issued an order prohibiting begging in the city, district collector Ashish Singh said.
Speaking to reporters, Singh said, “Our awareness campaign against begging will continue until the end of December. From January 1, if anyone is caught giving alms, a First Information Report (FIR) will be filed against them.” He urged residents to refrain from supporting begging, saying, “I appeal to all residents of Indore not to become partners in the sin by giving alms.”
Authorities have exposed several gangs exploiting people through begging and have also rehabilitated many individuals involved in the practice, Singh added.
This initiative aligns with a pilot project launched by the Union ministry of social justice and empowerment to make 10 cities in India, including Indore, beggar-free.
