The Trinamool Congress is in stock-taking mode. On July 21, Abhishek Banerjee, the party’s national general secretary, had announced that leaders who had not performed well in the Lok Sabha elections would be changed in the coming months. In line with the warning, TMC has now sought a report card from its workers.

Sources told CNN-News18 that a report has been sought from candidates, district presidents, and some MLAs on how leaders of the area performed during elections. Apart from this, the working of the administration during the polls will also be looked into.

Abhishek Banerjee, addressing the Martyrs’ Day programme — an annual mass meeting organised by the Trinamool Congress to commemorate the 1993 Kolkata firing incident — had iterated that he had been away from organisational work for over a month-and-a-half to analyse the election results and the effects would be visible in the next three months.

The exercise has ruffled some feathers within the party, with workers anxious of the changes that may be implemented after the stock-taking.

Though TMC won in 29 seats and reduced BJP’s seats from 18 to 12, an internal probe revealed that the party did not perform well in urban areas. Sources say TMC may change its leaders in municipalities in preparation for the 2026 polls. Party workers, too, have been asked for suggestions to improve the TMC’s tally.

In 2026, the Trinamool Congress will have to face 15 years of anti-incumbency and sources say the party believes good administration can bring in good governance — resulting in a favourable election result.
