“I have said that age is a factor. Yes, I have said it. I stayed on the road for two months during the Nabajowar programme. I am in my 30s. Will I be able to do that in my 70s,” asked Abhishek Banerjee at an event in his constituency

Amid the controversy over new and old guard in the Trinamool Congress (TMC), party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee cleared his stand, stating he will do any work given to him as he is a loyal soldier.

“I have said that age is a factor. Yes, I have said it. I stayed on the road for two months during the Nabajowar programme. I am in my 30s. Will I be able to do that in my 70s,” asked Abhishek Banerjee at an event in his constituency.

The discussion started on January 1, as party state president Subrata Bakshi said that if Abhishek Banerjee contests the upcoming election, he will not back out from the fight, and if he fights, he will do so under Mamata’s leadership and party’s symbol.

Amid differences between the old and new guard, some leaders requested Banerjee to become active, as one section believes he is inactive.

“Last time, the winning margin in Diamond Harbour was 3,22,000 and this time it will be 4 lakh,” he said.

On people asking whether he will be active or not, his message was clear: “That does not mean I will not work for the party. Mamata Banerjee is running her party. I will do whatever work is assigned to me. Even if they cut my head, I will say Joy Bangla.”

On Sunday, Banerjee started a senior citizen pension programme, where cheques were handed to 100 beneficiaries. In December, Banerjee had declared that he would initiate pension for senior citizens in his constituency.

Banerjee stated that he is sure that he will be providing pension to 76,000 senior citizens. He also stressed that he believes that State Government will start a pension scheme soon.

He also hit out at the BJP, alleging they were not paying the MNREGA dues.
