We are grateful to the Documentary Branch of The Academy for honoring this story of resilience and justice.”
Nisha Pahuja had earlier told Variety, “Gender equity and justice within India have been central to my work over the past decade. With ‘To Kill a Tiger,’ I encountered a story that simply had to be told because of the bravery, honesty, and resilience of the family at the heart of it.”
In 2017, after a 13-year-old girl was sexually assaulted in Bero, Jharkhand, her father Ranjit, a farmer, demanded justice. The documentary “To Kill a Tiger,” explores his case and follows the emotional journey of Ranjit. The synopsis of the documentary states,”A cinematic documentary, To Kill a Tiger follows Ranjit’s uphill battle to find justice for his child. In India, where a rape is reported every 20 minutes and conviction rates are less than 30 percent, Ranjit’s decision to support his daughter is virtually unheard of. With tremendous access, we witness the emotional journey of an ordinary man facing extraordinary circumstances. A father whose love for his daughter forces a social reckoning that will reverberate for years to come.”
Mindy Kaling and Dev Patel are executive producers of To Kill A Tiger. In an interview, Dev Patel said, “This guy is the ultimate underdog – he is better than any character I have played… He has to navigate a system that is overbearing.” “
