Often, in mass films, directors and producers prefer not to take the offbeat path and prefer to use tried and tested tropes so that most sections of the moviegoers are impressed. After all, a lot of money is at stake and anything unconventional or hatke might alienate viewers, leading to heavy losses. But Pushpa 2 – The Rule is an exception. Here, the makers experimented and how – the Jathra scene sees Allu Arjun wearing a saree and shaking his legs on two songs as well as fighting baddies. Even in the end, he wears a saree and does action.
Trade experts praise Allu Arjun’s path-breaking saree scene in Pushpa 2: “In Bollywood, no director would have attempted such a scene; our actors wouldn’t have believed their ears”
It’s a lesson that we need to learn, feel the experts. Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “If any actor in Bollywood would have been told to wear a saree and do action in not one but two scenes, our actors wouldn’t have believed their ears.”
He continued, “We are in our comfort zone and don’t want to take risks. It’s the South actors who take risks. Yes, Allu Arjun is a fine actor. But more than that, he’s a courageous actor. He had the vision to try something so new and drastic. And it worked; people are clapping in those sequences. It further shows the disconnect between our filmmakers and that of the South.”
Distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal added, “Down South, they have the conviction to do so. In Bollywood, no actor or director would have attempted, and no writer would have thought of such a scene.”
Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, exulted, “To me, it shows the confidence of the actor, writer and director. When you are supremely confident, you do take risks like these. This can also backfire if it is not lapped up by the audience. So, only when you have confidence, do you take such risks. In such a scenario, the risk paid off.”
