NAGPUR: Six women farm labourers drowned after their boat capsized in Wainganga river near Ganpur village in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli Tuesday. They were on their way to work in chilli fields in Kot village in Chandrapur’s Pombhurna tehsil. Only two bodies had been recovered till late evening. Gadchiroli SP Neelotpal said police teams and other volunteers conducted a thorough search for the four other bodies, but the operation had to be stopped post sunset and would resume on Wednesday.
Another boat carrying eight women workers also capsized while crossing to Chandrapur, but its occupants somehow miraculously managed to survived. It’s learnt the two groups would usually walk across exposed riverbed on any other routine day. However, a few days ago, water was released from Chamorshi’s Chichdoh barrage into river, causing it to swell.
