TIRUPATI/VISAKHAPATNAM: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that the priority of his government is to fight corruption and corrupt people. “Fight against corruption, action against corrupt people has been the priority of government,” Modi said, adding that the poor have the power to defeat poverty if they are given resources.
He was addressing a meeting after inaugurating the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes and Narcotics campus at Palasamudram village in Gorantla mandal, Andhra Pradesh.
“Our tax reforms have led to a drastic increase in tax collections in the last decade. We have instilled confidence in taxpayers who were otherwise being harassed by the previous regimes. Even reluctant taxpayers are forthcoming about paying taxes as they are confident their money will be put to proper use by the present government, which has changed the country’s infrastructure landscape in the last decade,” Modi said. “The Niti Aayog report released yesterday throws light on the fact that about 25 crore people were lifted above the poverty line by the present government in the last nine years,” Modi said.
Earlier, interacting via video call with tribals of Araku Valley mandal at the government primary school in Kotta Bhalluguda, Modi said the central government aims at welfare of particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTGs). Real development means taking welfare schemes to interior pockets of tribal areas, he said. The PM promised to provide power to every house. Government has been providing 150 work days to PVTG families by issuing job cards to eligible beneficiaries under the employment assurance scheme.
A tribal woman, Swabi Ganga of Gadwaguda village in Araku Valley mandal, replied to the PM’s query about PM-Janman. She said she learned of the benefits of the PM-Janman scheme through an awareness programme held by district officials. Ganga said she applied for PM Awas Yojana for a house, PM Jal Jeevan Yojana for a tap connection, Ayushman Bharat cards under PM Jan Arogya, and a free gas connection under PM Ujwala Yojana, and she was sanctioned benefits.
