Union Minister of State for Information, Broadcasting, and Parliamentary Affairs L. Murugan on Monday (January 6, 2025) disapproved of Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu’s decision not to accede to Governor R.N. Ravi’s request to play the national anthem at the beginning of his address during the State Assembly session.
“The Speaker is common to all and should function accordingly,” he said in a statement. Mr. Murugan also accused the ruling DMK government of insulting the national anthem.
“It is customary and the duty of all States to play the national anthem during Legislative Assembly proceedings that begin with the Governor’s address. But, in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, with an intention to act against the Governor, there have been instances of insulting the national anthem,” he claimed.
Instead of undertaking constructive work for the welfare of the people, the ‘Dravida model’ government is engaging in unnecessary politics, against the interest of the nation, Mr. Murugan alleged.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin should shed his attitude of “functioning against the Governor and the Constitution,” he added.
