HATHRAS: A court ordered a 14-day judicial remand for the main accused and another individual in the Hathras stampede case on Saturday. Investigations are now focusing on their “political connections”. Devprakash Madhukar, the ‘mukhya sevadar (chief volunteer)’ who organised the satsang where 121 people died, and Sanju Yadav were arrested by police late on Friday.
The duo was presented before the chief judicial magistrate’s court in Hathras and transferred to Aligarh district jail. The probe has now extended to establishing political and financial links of Surajpal Singh, alias Bhole Baba.
SP (Hathras) Nipun Agarwal said, “Madhukar, arrested late on Friday, was recently contacted by some political parties. Financial transactions, money trails, and call records are under scrutiny.”
Madhukar is the primary suspect named in the FIR lodged at Sikandara Rau police station. Nine individuals, all ‘sevadars’, have been arrested so far. Contrary to the police statement, Madhukar’s lawyer, A P Singh, claimed in a video statement that he surrendered to the police in Delhi, where he was receiving medical treatment.
