NEW DELHI: Nutty Village, a startup based in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao will introduce two new peanut butter flavors to honor former US President Jimmy Carter, who died Sunday.
Company founder 29-year-old Aman Kumar said the new flavors are a tribute to Carter’s support of agriculture and rural development. Carter, who had a connection to India through his mother’s work there as per the Carter Center, is considered a “champion of peanut farming.”
“As a tribute to the former president of the United States of America, considered a champion of peanut farming and rural development, we will be dedicating our upcoming range of coffee-flavoured peanut butter and barbeque-flavoured peanut butter in his honour,” he told PTI.
The coffee and barbeque flavors will join the company’s existing dark chocolate, jaggery, and unsweetened options.
The enterprise collaborates with approximately 50 farmers, sourcing groundnuts from 5-6 suppliers for peanut butter production. They engage women’s self-help groups in processing, creating local employment opportunities, noted Kumar, who holds a Master’s in Social Entrepreneurship from TISS. The company, co-founded with Sushant Berma in 2020, aims to help small peanut farmers earn better prices by cutting out intermediaries.
Unnao district is home to approximately 10,000 peanut farmers, with 2,000 of them practicing organic farming.
Manish Singh, a farmer from Unnao, said, “We first met Aman when he wanted to discuss how we could all work together for better profits. He brought us seeds and we worked on figuring out the best farming methods.”
Meanwhile, Chandkali, a member of a self-help group, said, “being involved in the secondary processing of the peanuts gets her good money.”
Jimmy Carter became the third US president to make an official visit to India. Following a recommendation from the then Indian Prime Minister Morarji Desai, a village in Gurugram district called Daulatabad Nasirpur was renamed as Carterpuri.
