Under the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand, which is likely to be notified this month, if one person in a live-in relationship decides to sever ties, they will have to inform their partner and share their consent on an online government portal.

According to officials, live-in couples in Uttarakhand will be required to register themselves on this state government portal. The final countdown for the notification of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) began on Monday as the state cabinet gave its nod to the procedures and rules.

The hill state will become the first in India to adopt the much-debated civil code. “It was our promise that the BJP government will bring UCC (in Uttarakhand). After getting assent from the President last year, the draft committee prepared a detailed report. The officials have been trained and now we will notify UCC very soon,” Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami told News18.

Uttarakhand’s civil code promises equal rights to women irrespective of their religion. The draft committee had recommended several measures, including registration of live-in couples.

“The idea is to protect rights, particularly rights of women. There have been instances when women feel cheated once the partner leaves, and it unnecessarily leads to a long legal battle,” an official said.

The draft recommendation approved by the state government includes norms on giving maintenance to children born to live-in couples. Besides, under the UCC, marriage registration will be mandatory irrespective of the personal laws.

Officials said the idea behind registration is to have a data bank, where a person’s marital status and date of separation, if any, granted by the court can be determined.
