The Rural Development and Panchayat Raj University in Gadag will be renamed Mahatma Gandhi Rural Development and Panchayat Raj University, Minister H K Patil announced in Belagavi on January 21. He was speaking at the unveiling of the Mahatma Gandhi statue in front of the Suvarna Soudha on the Pune-Bengaluru national highway.

He said that this was decided by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the RDPR Minister Priyank Kharge. “This will help us commit ourselves to the dream of Mahatma Gandhi of ensuring the comprehensive development of rural areas in Karnataka and to enable the university to conduct research and development about the policies needed towards this,” the Minister said.

Mr Patil, who is the chairman of the committee to celebrate the centenary of the 1924 Belagavi session of the Congress, welcomed the guests, leaders, freedom fighters, and others who gathered at the venue.

He said the Gandhiji statue will inspire the youth of the country to engage themselves in social service. “It will also inspire legislators to make laws and policies that will lead to all-round peace and prosperity,” he said.

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D. K. Shivakumar, Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti, PWD Minister Satish Jarkiholi and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh were among those present.
