Filmmaker David Dhawan, Varun’s father, recently opened up about his son’s initial struggles and feelings of insecurity towards co-star Sidharth Malhotra. David Dhawan disclosed that he was intentionally strict with Varun during their first film collaboration to ensure he stayed grounded and focused. Varun, who had been launched by Karan Johar and had assisted him on My Name is Khan, was accustomed to a certain work environment. Reflecting on this period, David mentioned, “Varun came back from abroad after studying, and I asked, ‘What do you want to do in life?’ Lalli (David’s wife) said, ‘Everyone is taking up a bank job these days’. We never talked about films. All of a sudden, he went to Karan Johar and said, ‘I want to assist you’.”
Karan Johar’s role in Varun’s career
Karan Johar played a pivotal role in launching Varun’s acting career. David recalled, “Karan came over to our house and said that he wants to launch him, and they did a photoshoot with Sidharth Malhotra.” During the shooting of SOTY, Varun felt insecure, particularly because of Sidharth Malhotra. David shared, “I was with him on set, and some days he used to be very upset. I told him, ‘These things happen in two-hero films. Listen, my son, you’re damn good. Your confidence is something else. Don’t be afraid, take the leap’.”

David Dhawan also reminisced about Varun’s journey from being an assistant director to an actor. “The cameraman, Ravi Chandran, was the one who told Karan to keep an eye on him,” David added, emphasizing the support and belief that industry veterans had in Varun’s potential. Despite his insecurities, Varun’s determination and confidence eventually shone through, leading him to a successful career.
