NEW DELHI: In a ceremonial handover on Thursday, Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi officially assumed the position of vice chief of the naval staff. Vice Admiral Tripathi laid a floral wreath at the national war memorial, paying homage to fallen soldiers on his appointment.
Before his current appointment, Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi served as the flag officer commanding-in-chief of the western naval command. His extensive naval career, which began with his commission into the Indian navy on July 1, 1985, has seen him in various critical roles.
An alumnus Sainik School Rewa and the national defence academy, Khadakwasla, Vice Admiral Tripathi specialized in communication and electronic warfare. His journey within the navy included serving as a signal communication officer and electronic warfare officer on frontline warships. He has also held key positions such as executive officer and principal warfare officer of the guided missile destroyer INS Mumbai. He has further commanded Indian naval ships Vinash, Kirch and Trishul.
He was appointed as the fleet operations officer of the western fleet in Mumbai, director of naval operations, principal director network centric operations, and principal director naval plans in New Delhi. His promotion to Rear Admiral saw him as the assistant chief of naval staff (Policy and Plans) at NHQ and subsequently as the flag officer commanding eastern fleet.
Elevated to the rank of Vice Admiral in June 2019, he assumed the role of commandant of the Indian naval academy at Ezhimala, Kerala. Subsequently, he served as the director general of naval operations during a crucial period from July 2020 to May 2021, steering the navy through maritime operations despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Vice Admiral Tripathi is a recipient of the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Nausena Medal for devotion to duty.
