NEW DELHI: A video shared online showed patient reports being used as paper plates at King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Mumbai, the plates appeared to contain information such as the hospital’s name, patient details, and medical procedures. In response, the hospital administration issued show cause notices to six employees.
The issue was brought to light by former mayor Kishori Pednekar, who shared the video on ‘X’, questioning the administration.
“What is going on?? Administration wake up…! Don’t be so reckless,” Pednekar said in his post.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also set up a committee to look into the matter, as stated by an official on Saturday, news agency PTI reported quoting an official.
Dr. Sangeeta Ravat, the Dean of KEM, explained that the plates were not made from patient reports, but rather from old CT scan folders given to scrap dealers for recycling. “The only mistake was that these scrap papers were not shredded before being given away,” Dr Ravat told PTI.
According to the BMC, patients receive their CT scan, MRI, and X-ray reports in paper folders, which are then given to scrap vendors once they become old. However, in this case, the folders had not been shredded before being turned into paper plates.
The BMC stated that the scrap vendor did not complete the assigned task properly and has issued memos to those responsible for supervising the process.
The BMC has formed a one-member committee, chaired by the Deputy Commissioner (Public Health), to investigate the incident. The hospital dean has also been asked to provide an explanation.
