CHENNAI: Actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay accused the DMK of cheating people after coming to power in Tamil Nadu by making false promises.
In a post on X, Vijay referenced a famous old Tamil film song, ‘Enthanai kalamthan yemarathuvar intha nattile, sontha nattilie’ (How long will they deceive us in this country, in our own country?) and added that there were several examples of DMK functionaries giving false assurances ahead of the 2021 assembly polls.
He cited that the most prominent example was that DMK functionaries, while canvassing votes for the 2021 assembly polls, claimed that they knew the secret to scrapping the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for medical admissions. However, after assuming power, they fooled people by declaring that only the Union govt had the authority to scrap NEET.
Vijay said the ruling party’s attempts to deceive the people with false assurances would no longer be successful in the future.
Transport minister S S Sivasankar, while reacting to Vijay’s post, said NEET was introduced when late AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa was chief minister of Tamil Nadu. Speaking to reporters in Chennai, the minister said the Neet issue flared up after medical aspirant S Anitha died suicide as she failed to clear the test.
He said, “The DMK has since taken up the issue and has been consistently demanding that the Union govt scrap NEET.” Deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin had recently obtained one crore signatures from people demanding that the Union govt scrap NEET, he added.
