CHENNAI: Like smoking and drinking, watching porn videos has become an addiction for the current generation, the Madras high court has said.
Justice N Anand Venkatesh made the observation while making it clear that merely downloading and watching child pornography on one’s personal electronic device did not constitute an offence under the POCSO Act and the IT Act.
“The generation Z children are grappling with this serious problem and instead of damning and punishing them, the society must be mature enough to properly advise and educate them and try to counsel them to get rid of that addiction,” Justice Anand Venkatesh said on Thursday.
Porn addiction is becoming a growing concern due to accessibility of sexually explicit material on the internet. With the click of a button, youngsters can be exposed to endless pages of adult content, the judge added.
The court quashed the prosecution initiated against a 28-year-old man who was booked under POCSO and IT Acts for downloading and watching child porn.
The court clarified that to constitute the offences one must have distributed the downloaded porn content in public or to others.
