NEW DELHI: Violence erupted again on Saturday in Murshidabad district, West Bengal, where one person sustained a bullet injury in Dhulian, Samserganj block. This follows extensive unrest on Friday in Suti and Samserganj areas during demonstrations against the Waqf (Amendment) Act.
At a Kolkata press briefing, ADG (Law and Order) Jawed Shamim indicated preliminary information suggests the shooting might have originated from BSF personnel rather than local police. The wounded individual is currently receiving treatment and is stable.
BSF forces were positioned in select areas of the district, which borders Bangladesh, following Friday’s disturbances. Authorities have apprehended 118 individuals linked to the violent incidents, with more arrests anticipated as operations continue.
Officials are actively managing the situation, with senior officers at ADG and IG levels present in Murshidabad. Specialised units have been deployed to maintain order. A separate incident involved a teenage boy, allegedly injured by police gunfire during the Suti clashes, who is now under medical care in Kolkata.
Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar emphasised strict action against perpetrators of violence. He stated, “The unfortunate incident that happened this morning may have been triggered by unsubstantiated rumours being spread from various quarters. I urge the people not to pay heed to such provocations, which are clearly the handiwork of miscreants.”
Kumar further added, “This is a fight between good and evil. Rumour mongering has to be stopped. We will request people not to take the law and order into their own hands. We assure them that the police will take the strongest measure against the culprits and protect the lives and properties of the common people.”
