Today marks the 29th release anniversary of filmmaker Aditya Chopra’s classic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Amrish Puri and Farida Jalal in pivotal roles, the film is not only still remembered but it also continues to run in Mumbai’s iconic single screen theatre Maratha Mandir since almost three decades.
When Nana Patekar had a ‘Jaa Simran jaa’ moment in a film also starring Shah Rukh Khan
DDLJ, as the film is fondly referred to, is known for a number of heartwarming moments. Out of these, one that is the most famous is the line “Jaa Simran jaa” uttered by Amrish Puri. This paves way for one of the happiest endings one would find in a love story. Not surprisingly, the line has become synonymous with the movie.
Years later in 2002, Nana Patekar also had a similar “Jaa Simran jaa” moment in a film. It happened in director Krishna Vamsi’s Shakti: The Power, which mainly starred Karisma Kapoor, Sanjay Kapoor, Nana Patekar and Deepti Naval. The movie is about Shekhar (Sanjay Kapoor) and Nandini (Karisma Kapoor), who are based in Canada. They fall in love, get married and give birth to a son named Raja (Jai Gidwani). One day, Shekhar gets to know that his family is going through some trouble in Bihar, India. He visits his hometown with Nandini and Raja to solve the matter.
Once they reach there, Nandini is shocked to see the violence and lawlessness practiced in the land, especially by Shekhar’s father and her father-in-law Narasimha (Nana Patekar). She wants to leave the place soon but is persuaded by her mother-in-law (Deepti Naval) to stay for a few more days to celebrate Shekhar’s birthday. However, Shekhar is killed by Narasimha’s rival Maharaj (Anupam Shyam).
Shattered by the death of her husband, Nandini wants to leave the place soon with Raja but Narasimha stops her. He now wants his grandson Raja to be raised like one of them, so that he can avenge the death of his father. Nandini, somehow, still manages to run away from the place, gets into a train and somehow reaches the airport to leave India. However, Narasimha and his men reach the airport and trace Nandini, hell bent to stop her.
Narasimha tries snatching his grandson from Nandini. However, he suddenly gets moved by Nandini’s love for her child and determination and suddenly lets her go saying “Jaa, jana chahti ho na? jaa”, much to the relief as well as shock of Nandini. She goes away to catch the flight in an emotional state.
This moment instantly makes us recall the “Jaa Simran jaa” scene from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. In the 1995 film, Kajol is set to take a train while here Karisma is set to catch a flight. Interestingly, Shakti also starred Shah Rukh Khan in an extended cameo. His character Jai Singh helps Karisma get into the train but gets killed in the process. Much before that, he gets to shake a leg with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the hit song ‘Ishq Kameena’.
