NEW DELHI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that a criminal case has been filed against Rahul Gandhi and he will be arrested after the Lok Sabha elections.
The remarks come after clashes between the Assam police and Congress workers in the Khanapara area.
Sarma alleged that Rahul Gandhi tried to enter Guwahati with a large group of people and vehicles, posing a potential threat to the city.
Despite repeated warnings to take an alternate route, the Congress workers clashed with the police, he said.
“We can only imagine the situation if 3000 people and 200 vehicles had entered Guwahati,” Sarma said, expressing concern over the potential chaos that could have ensued.
He further accused Rahul Gandhi of instigating the incident by standing in his vehicle. As a result, a criminal case will be registered against the Wayanad MP, and the police will conduct an inquiry and take appropriate action, including his arrest, after the Lok Sabha polls.
The clash between Congress workers and Assam Police occurred when Rahul Gandhi was leading the party’s Manipur to Mumbai Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, which was about to enter Guwahati city. The Congress workers were denied entry into the city and a confrontation took place.
Meanwhile, Rahul targeted Sarma for directing Assam DGP to book him, claiming that “fear in their hearts” has led to such a direction.
“They are jumping up and down now, filing a case against me. The case shows the fear in their hearts. They are afraid as people of Assam are standing up as ‘tufan’ and ‘andhi’ (storm) against them,” Gandhi said while addressing a public meeting earlier.
