Doctors at Wellcare Hospital and Research Institute in Tiruchi recently removed a tumour weighing 12 kg from the abdominal region of a 52-year-old woman.

According to an official release on Saturday, the patient had been referred to the hospital with complaints of progressive abdominal distension for over three years, besides weight loss and decreased food intake.

Biopsy revealed that the growth was a ‘dedifferentiated liposarcoma’, a malignant tumour arising from the fat cells.

The surgery, performed by K. Rajasekaran, consultant surgical gastroenterologist, and assisted by anaesthetist Gugan and surgeon M. Karthikeyan, lasted five hours. The operation removed the tumour mass that was found to be adhering to the right kidney, ureter and major vessels, covering a major part of the patient’s abdomen.

The patient had recovered with post-operative care and is back on a normal diet, said the release.
