Youth dies in TN deaddiction centre after being gagged by staffers | Chennai News

COIMBATORE: Kovilpalayam police in Coimbatore district arrested a psychologist and a warden in a deaddiction centre on Saturday morning over the death of a 20-year-old youth who was undergoing treatment there.
Police said the arrested duo allegedly gagged the youth with clothes and duct tape on Saturday evening after he started to shout at all.
The deceased has been identified as Kishore, 20, son of Pichaimuthu from Sakthi Nagar at Gandhigramam in Karur district.Pichaimuthu is a doctor in a government primary health centre in Karur district.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Kishore was addicted to marijuana (ganja). He was admitted to the Helping Hands De-Addiction Centre on the Karuvalur Road at Kovilpalayam on February 28. More than 50 people were undergoing treatment in the deaddiction centre.
Around 1pm on Friday, Kishore started to shout at all at the centre. Other inmates told the management that they would vacate if such nuisance was continuing there.
Psychologist B Jaba Prasannaraj, 27, of Soosaiyapuram in Tirupur and warden M Aravind Hari, 28, of Devi Nagar at Alandurai in Coimbatore district allegedly gagged Kishore with a cloth and duct tape and tied him with a belt. The youth developed suffocation, and the staff of the de-addiction centre took the youth to a nearby private hospital where doctors declared him dead in the early hours of Saturday.
The dead body was sent to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Kovilpalayam police inspector Gnanasekaran and team visited the de-addiction centre and conducted a detailed investigation. Police registered a case against the warden and the psychologist under Section 304 (2) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and the police arrested the duo.
Police said they suspect some other people might have helped the duo and they would be included in the case based on investigations.
