NEW DELHI: YS Sharmila Reddy, who merged her party YSR Telangana Party with the Congress on January 4, has been made the president of the Andhra Pradesh Congress with immediate effect. Sharmila is the daughter of the former chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh, the late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, and the younger sister of Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.
The outgoing Andhra Congress president Gidigu Rudra Raju has been made the Special Invitee to the Congress Working Committee. Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh will be held along with the Lok Sabha elections.
After a convincing victory in Telangana in the just-concluded assembly elections, the Congress is gearing up to make some electoral gains in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. The Congress could not win a single seat in the state in the last two assembly elections. The grand old party could not open its account in the state in the last Lok Sabha elections also.
