KANPUR: An undertrial died when he jumped from a running train allegedly in a bid to escape police custody near Sarai Bhupat railway station in Etawah district on Thursday night.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sanjay Kumar said that undertrial Sonu Kumar Das died after he jumped from Swatantrata Senani Express in a bid to escape from police custody while being taken to Bihar from Delhi late at around 2.30 am.
SSP further said that Sonu Kumar Das, a resident of Darbhanga Bihar, was accused of murdering his wife.
He and his mother were lodged in the sub-divisional jail of Benipur in Darbhanga.
He, however, had escaped from there recently. “A couple of days ago, he was arrested by Bihar police from Delhi. Last night, Bihar Police was taking him to Darbhanga on a transit remand, when he jumped from a moving train with the intention of escaping from police custody. He apparently died after his head apparently crashed into a OHE pole. The body has been sent for postmortem, and further legal proceedings are being conducted.”
He said that the matter was being investigated by the local police along with the Government Railway Police (GRP). “I had sent CO Jaswantnagar and the local police station incharge to investigate the spot,” added SSP further.
