Actor Adil Hussain recently opened up about his stint on the popular science-fiction series Star Trek: Discovery. Despite his role being limited to three episodes, Adil revealed that the experience left a lasting impact on him—both emotionally and financially.
Adil Hussain reveals he earns nearly Rs 5 lakhs every few months from Star Trek: Discovery; says, “I’m just a nobody from India. In comparison…”
“Residuals”: A Perpetual Benefit
Speaking on the Cyrus Says podcast hosted by Cyrus Broacha, Adil Hussain discussed how the concept of residual payments continues to benefit him. He explained, “It was a three-episode guest appearance. They paid me little money, but the good thing is that I keep getting residuals every two months. If they are earning money, I earn money, 1%. So every three or four months, I get $5000 or $6000 (around Rs 5 lakh). Crazy, no?”
Residuals refer to a percentage of the revenue that actors earn every time a show generates income through broadcasting, streaming, or other channels. For Adil, this model provides steady income years after filming wrapped.
A Memorable Welcome on Set
Adil Hussain fondly recalled his first day on the sets of Star Trek: Discovery, shot at Pinewood Studios in Toronto. He shared how the cast and crew, including lead actor Sonequa Martin-Green, greeted him with immense warmth and respect.
“I reached the set, got my makeup done, and they escorted me to the shooting floor. I see all the heads of the department and my three co-stars, including the main actor Sonequa Martin-Green, all standing in a circle waiting for me. Can you believe it? I’m just a nobody from India. In comparison to what happens in our country, you’re a guest actor somewhere from Assam…”
The director introduced Adil to everyone, making him feel valued. Adil even gave a short speech, sharing, “I was born in a town where newspapers used to come three days after they were published, and today, I am crossing the galaxy, so thank you.” He was hugged by the lead star, who whispered how thrilled she was to work with him. “All the hierarchies and boundaries disappeared. You’re meeting someone on the human level,” Adil said, reflecting on the camaraderie on set.
Speaking of the professional front, Adil’s last Hindi film was Ulajh, starring Janhvi Kapoor. He was also seen playing one of the leads in an Assamese feature film, Sikaar.
