NEW DELHI: Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday took charge of the agriculture and rural development ministries and said the two ministries would work as important links in realising the resolve of PM Narendra Modi to make India a developed country.
Farmer welfare is the top priority of the PM,” Chouhan said, adding that he, his fellow ministers and officers work work together as a team.“We will put in all our hard work and efforts,” he added. The minister said he had handed over a ‘sankalp patra’ to his officers, which contained the PM’s guarantees and also steps to be taken for the welfare of farmers.
Observing that India lived in its villages, Chouhan said rural development was a priority for the govt and several schemes were being implemented to improve quality of life in the hinterland. He highlighted schemes like rural roadways, expanding asset creation under MGNREGA and delivering on the promise of making 3 crore women ‘Lakhpati Didis’.
Minister of state in rural development Kamlesh Paswan also took charge.
Chouhan said schemes like Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana had changed the rural landscape. Talking about MGNREGS, he said it was a “huge employment generator and there is now an emphasis on creating assets under the scheme”.
On the ‘Lakhpati Didis’ scheme, Chouhan said it was very close to his heart and the govt was committed to ensure justice for women in the country. The scheme aims to enable women to earn a minimum income of Rs 1 lakh per annum.
