HYDERABAD: In an outreach to the Madiga community in the state, chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Sunday promised them that the Congress will include them in Rajya Sabha nominations, state legislative council as well as nominated posts of chairpersons and vice-chairpersons in various corporations. He also reiterated the party’s commitment on sub-categorisation of SCs and passage of a Bill in Parliament if it comes to power at the Centre.
Revanth’s assurance comes a day after opposition leader K Chandrasekhar Rao’s threat at his Chevella public meeting that he will hold a dharna with 1.30 lakh Dalits if ‘Dalit Bandhu’ scheme is not implemented immediately by the Congress govt. Also, Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS) leader Manda Krishna Madiga has thrown his weight behind the BJP following PM Narendra Modi’s promise to set up a committee on the issue of SC sub-categorisation.
CM promised better future for Madigas
The CM made these assurances after Madiga leaders including senior Congress leaders Gajjela Kantham, Pidamarthi Ravi and Vara Prasad called on him seeking justice for the community which was not given a single Lok Sabha ticket by the party for the May 13 polls.
Of the three SC reserved LS constituencies in the state, Mallu Ravi was nominated for Nagarkurnool, Kadiyam Kavya (Warangal) and G Vamshi Krishna (Peddapalli). All the three are either Malas or from sub-castes of SCs. Even Sri Ganesh, nominated for Secunderabad Cantonment assembly bypoll, is an SC but not from the Madiga community.
“The CM promised a better future for Madigas once the poll code is lifted. He said there are opportunities awaiting Madigas who worked hard to ensure party’s victory in assembly polls,” said Kantham.
Kantham said the CM gave an assurance that the Congress will ensure social justice for all castes and he was also aware that Madigas comprise over 70% of the total SC population in the state.
Pidamarthi Ravi said they assured the CM that Madiga leaders will withdraw their agitation and would tour all the 17 LS constituencies to ensure Congress victory.
“Our objective is to defeat the BJP,” he said.
