NEW DELHI: Pune Police has registered an FIR against NCP Leader (Sharad Pawar faction) Jitendra Awhad, who stoked a controversy with his controversial remarks on Lord Ram. The FIR was lodged at Vishrambaugh Police station under IPC section 295 A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) on a complaint by Pune BJP chief Dheeraj Ghate.
At an event in Maharashtra’s Shirdi, Awhad had said, “Lord Ram was not a vegetarian, he was a non-vegetarian.Where would a person living in the forest for 14 years go to find vegetarian food?” Later, amid severe backlash, the NCP leader expressed regret to those offended by his statement. However, he tried to put up a strong defence and said the remarks were not his own interpretation in the matter but was based on an ‘authentic’ version of Valmiki Ramayana.
